Washington, D.C. — The U.S. House of Representatives has passed H.R. 2872 - Further Additional Continuing Appropriations and Other Extensions Act, 2024. Representative John Curtis (R-UT) expressed his disappointment in Congress for not coming together to solve fiscal year 2024 spending, which is already several months in.
In a statement, Representative Curtis said, "Last November, I supported a continuing resolution to give our new Speaker the opportunity to unite the conference around a plan to rein in our out-of-control spending while responsibly keeping the government open."
Curtis emphasized his concern about the path that the continuing resolution could lead to, stating, "I am disappointed in Congress for not coming together to solve fiscal year 2024 spending, which we are already months into. I voted no on this continuing resolution because we should stay in Washington and get our work done, not pave a path for trillions of dollars in spending that will be crafted behind closed doors."
The passing of the continuing resolution allows for the temporary funding of government operations, preventing a shutdown. However, Curtis argues that it is crucial for Congress to remain focused on addressing spending issues and finding long-term solutions.
As the government continues to operate under a temporary funding measure, the urgency to address the fiscal year 2024 spending remains. Representative Curtis's call for Congress to stay in Washington and work towards finding a solution echoes the sentiments of many who believe that transparency and accountability are essential in the decision-making process.
The passing of the continuing resolution may have provided a short-term solution, but it also highlights the need for a more comprehensive approach to fiscal matters. As Congress moves forward, it is imperative that representatives from both sides of the aisle come together to address the nation's spending and work towards a sustainable future. Only through collaboration and open dialogue can Congress effectively tackle the challenges that lie ahead.
