U.S. Senator Mitt Romney has joined a bipartisan group of lawmakers urging President Joe Biden to address the issue of stalled U.S.-China adoptions. The effort, led by Senator Chuck Grassley and Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chairman Ben Cardin, aims to resolve the People’s Republic of China's decision to halt intercountry adoptions for those without Chinese familial ties.

Representatives Erin Houchin and Val Hoyle are co-leading this initiative in the House of Representatives. The lawmakers emphasized the importance of advocating for families who have already been matched with approximately 300 children in China, some of whom have health conditions.

"We request that you act in the best interest of these children and families by urging the PRC to fulfill and uphold the commitment the country has made," stated the lawmakers in their letter to President Biden.

They further highlighted that "the American families that have been matched with their adoptive children are prepared to meet their long-term medical and emotional needs, and to give them the love and nurturing they need." They noted that many homes have been prepared for these children since families were notified about their matches.

The letter also referenced a State Department notice indicating that China might proceed with adoptions for certain countries. The lawmakers called on President Biden to ensure this includes families from the United States as well. A total of 103 bicameral signatories supported this letter.
