The Utah Valley University women’s golf team is set to compete in the West Texas Classic, taking place March 2-3 at the Abilene Country Club’s North Course in Abilene, Texas. The tournament is hosted by Abilene Christian and features a field of NCAA Division I teams.
The event will use a stroke play format over two days. Teams will play 36 holes on Monday and finish with an 18-hole round on Tuesday, both starting at 8:15 a.m. The scoring system will be play-five, score-four. Competing teams include Abilene Christian, Bowling Green State, Drake, Lamar, Oklahoma City, Prairie View A&M, South Dakota State, Stephen F. Austin, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, Texas Southern, Texas Tech, Incarnate Word, Northern Colorado, UT Arlington, UTEP, Toledo and Utah Valley.
The North Course at Abilene Country Club is a par-70 layout measuring 6,246 yards and is described as having a traditional Texas design with challenging approach shots and demanding greens.
Representing Utah Valley this week are Valentina Zuleta, Chloe Jang, Rylie Rodriguez, Mia Pace and Maria Ortiz.
In their previous outing at the Mountain Classic Match Play held at The Classic Club, Utah Valley lost to Washington State with a score of 4-1. Valentina Zuleta earned Utah Valley’s only point by defeating Grace Rubelsky 2&1 after coming from behind on the back nine to close out the match on the 17th hole. Other matches saw Alyssa Butterfus narrowly lose to Anya Cedo (1&0), Pati Uluave fall to Agnes Brink (2&1), Maria Ortiz lose to Hannah Harrison (2&1), and Chloe Jang defeated by Kaitlyn Helm (7&5).
Utah Valley will next compete in the Pizza Hut Lady Thunderbird Invitational from March 6-8 at Sunbrook Golf Club in St. George.
