Utah Valley University’s baseball team split a doubleheader against Northern Colorado on Saturday at UCCU Ballpark. After dropping the first game 14-3, the Wolverines rebounded with a 12-1 win in the second matchup.
In the opening game, Utah Valley struggled to keep pace after falling behind early. Jayden Smith led the offense with three hits, including an RBI double in the second inning that scored Mason Strong. The Wolverines attempted to rally in the third inning by loading the bases, eventually scoring on a wild pitch and a groundout from Chipper Beck. Cohen Baack made his debut for UVU, pitching 2 2/3 innings and allowing two hits. Jordan Chancellor also saw his first action on the mound at UCCU Ballpark.
The second game saw Quinn Holt deliver a strong performance, pitching five innings of one-hit ball and recording nine strikeouts. Holt allowed his only run and hit in the first inning before retiring nine consecutive batters. “Quinn Holt tossed five innings of one-hit ball with nine strikeouts in the second game on Saturday,” according to team officials.
Utah Valley responded to an early deficit by scoring 12 unanswered runs. The tying run came in the first inning when a double steal attempt resulted in an error by Northern Colorado’s catcher. Hunter Katschke homered in the second inning to give UVU a lead they would not relinquish.
Mason Hamlin contributed significantly with a home run in the third inning, finishing 3-for-4 with three runs scored and three RBIs. Luke Iverson added a two-run single in the fourth, followed by Kaden Carpenter’s three-run homer—his fourth of the season—extending Utah Valley’s lead.
Katschke ended game two going 2-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs scored. Brody Block doubled home two more runs late in the game as part of Utah Valley’s offensive surge.
Chance Wallace pitched two innings of relief for UVU, giving up one hit and walking two batters. This marked Utah Valley’s first two-hitter since April 21, 2024.
Five Wolverine hitters recorded at least two RBIs during game two. Iverson finished with two hits and two RBIs.
