Utah Valley University’s softball team will travel to Riverside, California, for a three-game Western Athletic Conference (WAC) series against the California Baptist Lancers starting Friday, Mar. 26. The games will be played at John C. Funk Stadium and are scheduled as a doubleheader on Friday evening and a single game on Saturday afternoon.
The matchup is significant as both teams are currently tied atop the WAC standings with UT Arlington after one week of league play. Utah Valley holds a 2-1 conference record following its recent series win over Utah Tech, despite midweek losses to Nevada and BYU.
Tatum Hall has been leading the Wolverines offensively, entering the series with a .425 batting average, seven home runs, and a nine-game hitting streak. Britney Moreno recently broke Utah Valley’s Division I era triples record and ranks third nationally this season in triples; she is also approaching school and conference milestones with her next triple.
This weekend’s contest features contrasting strengths: Utah Valley leads the WAC in batting average (.358) and ranks among the top 50 nationally in several offensive categories, while California Baptist boasts the league’s top pitching staff led by Miranda de Nava with a conference-best 2.67 earned run average. Offensively for CBU, Makayla Medellin leads with nine home runs and 37 runs batted in.
The two programs have met twenty times previously, with CBU holding an 11-9 advantage but UVU winning their last two meetings. Many games between these teams have been closely contested; fourteen of their prior matchups were decided by three or fewer runs.
Following this weekend’s series in Riverside—which will be streamed live on ESPN+—the Wolverines return to Utah for five games including another WAC matchup against UT Arlington.
