Utah Valley University’s women’s softball team overcame a five-run deficit on April 11 to defeat Abilene Christian University, 8-7, in Abilene, Texas. The Wolverines secured both the game and the series with a late rally.
The victory was marked by Utah Valley’s largest comeback of the season. The team trailed 5-0 entering the fifth inning and was behind 7-2 going into the sixth. However, they scored two runs in both the fifth and sixth innings before adding four more in the seventh to claim the win.
Britney Moreno played a key role by hitting a game-tying triple as part of her two-hit performance that extended her reached-base streak to 20 games. Tatum Hall delivered a go-ahead double in the seventh inning and drove in two runs overall. Emma Haygood also contributed with an RBI single and grounded out for another run batted in.
Abilene Christian took an early lead with three runs in the first inning from a solo home run and doubles, then added two more runs on another home run in the second. Despite loading the bases twice earlier, Utah Valley did not score until ACU issued three walks and hit a batter in the fifth inning, allowing UVU to capitalize with sacrifice plays and wild pitches.
Hannah Ortega pitched effectively in relief for Utah Valley starting from the fifth inning. She threw over two perfect innings without allowing any baserunners and retired ACU on just five pitches in their final at-bat.
Utah Valley is set to return home for its last homestand of the season against Tarleton State Texans. The upcoming series includes a Friday doubleheader beginning at 4 p.m., followed by Saturday’s finale at noon. All games will be available via ESPN+ streaming.
