Utah Valley University’s softball team is set to compete in the Beehive Classic in St. George this weekend, marking its first games of the season in Utah. The tournament, hosted by Utah Tech at Karl Brooks Field, will see the Wolverines face off against three other in-state teams: Utah State, Weber State, and Utah.
The schedule includes two matchups against Utah State and one each against Weber State and Utah over a three-day period. All games are available for streaming on WAC International, with live statistics provided at GoUVU.com/stats.
The Wolverines come into the tournament following a strong showing at the Rebel Classic in Las Vegas, where they finished with four wins out of five games. The team achieved a program-best 49 runs over a five-game stretch against Division I opponents. Freshman Megan Sterzer was recognized as D1Softball Mid-Major Freshman of the Week after hitting 8-for-13 with one home run, a double, four walks, eight RBIs, and seven runs scored during the tournament.
So far this season, Utah Valley has recorded its highest totals through 15 games in runs (111), hits (146), doubles (26), and home runs (15). The team’s batting average (.360), on-base percentage (.446), and slugging percentage (.564) are also at record highs for this stage of the season.
Four seniors—Britney Moreno, Angelique Mann, Emma Haygood, and Bailey Marvin—have each posted batting averages of .400 or better. Moreno leads with 25 hits and ranks among national leaders for stolen bases while maintaining both a 14-game reached base streak and an eight-game hitting streak. Haygood leads the team with five home runs and 17 RBIs; Mann tops the conference in doubles; Marvin has contributed two home runs and ten RBIs from the cleanup spot.
Pitcher Lily Riley played a key role during the Las Vegas tournament by pitching 16.1 innings with 17 strikeouts and allowing only three earned runs across two complete games.
In terms of series history:
– Against Utah State, UVU last won in 2022 but lost their most recent meeting.
– With Weber State, neither team has dominated recently; UVU won their season series in 2024 before being swept last year.
– The rivalry with Utah has been less frequent since 2014; UVU’s last win came in 2019.
Utah Valley currently holds second place in home runs within their conference (WAC) this season and is ranked nationally for sacrifice flies as well as multi-run innings.
After this weekend’s event, the Wolverines will travel to Northern California for additional road games before beginning their home schedule on March 17.
