Utah Valley earned a 7-6 walk-off victory against Utah Tech on March 21, splitting a doubleheader and clinching the series two games to one. The Wolverines improved to 19-9 overall and 2-1 in Western Athletic Conference play, while Utah Tech fell to 11-20 and 1-2 in conference.
The outcome matters as it places Utah Valley in a three-way tie atop the WAC standings after the first week of league play. California Baptist and UT Arlington also won their respective series, setting up a competitive start to the season.
Tatum Hall led the Wolverines offensively, going 5-for-8 across both games with a home run, double, three runs batted in, and two runs scored. Hall drew a bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the seventh inning of game two to secure both the win and the series for Utah Valley. Head coach Cody Thomson said, “Really excited to win that series. Tatum couldn’t be better right now. Lily [Riley] had another really good week, she just ran out of gas a little bit there at the end. I was really proud of Payge [Armendariz] coming in at the very end to close that out for us. The little things like that are going to make a big difference in the end for us.”
In game one, Utah Tech took an early lead with four runs in the first inning following an error and several singles. Despite a late rally by Utah Valley—including home runs from Hall and Emma Haygood—the Trailblazers held on for an 8-6 win. Britney Moreno set a program record with her career triple but was left stranded.
Game two saw Utah Valley take an early lead with hits from Haygood and Amber Rodriguez, who hit her first collegiate home run. After back-and-forth scoring—including key plays by Kinley Pappas for Utah Tech—the Wolverines reclaimed control late in the game. In their final at-bat, they loaded the bases before Hall’s walk sealed their comeback.
Looking ahead, Utah Valley will continue its homestand by hosting Nevada on Monday and BYU on Tuesday at Wolverine Softball Field. Both games will be streamed online.
