Utah Valley University defeated Cal State San Bernardino 15-1 on Mar. 28, using a season-high total of 15 runs and 15 hits to secure the victory. DJ Massey led the Wolverines by going three for three with a home run and a career-best five runs batted in, while Derek Houston added three hits and his second career home run.
The strong offensive showing was important for Utah Valley (11-14), which built momentum early in the game. Walks to Hunter Katschke and Kaden Carpenter set up an initial scoring opportunity, followed by a bunt single from Mason Strong that loaded the bases. A balk gave UVU its first run before an error allowed another to score.
In the third inning, Carpenter hit a fastball off the right-field wall before scoring on Mason Hamlin’s sacrifice fly. The Wolverines broke open the game with four runs in the fourth inning after singles from Jayden Smith and Houston, capped by Massey’s two-run single to center field. Additional contributions included RBI plays from Katschke and Carpenter.
Massey continued his performance with his first home run of the season during a fifth-inning rally that pushed UVU’s lead to double digits. On defense, Jacob Heppner pitched six innings for Utah Valley, allowing just one run while inducing mostly soft contact from Coyotes hitters.
A five-run sixth inning ensured UVU would reach run-rule territory as all nine batters came up to hit in that frame. RBI singles from Block and Chipper Beck were followed by Houston’s home run to right-center field—the team’s second homer of the day from lower in their batting order.
Jordan Chancellor closed out the game with three outs in his second career appearance on the mound for Utah Valley. The series between Utah Valley and Cal State San Bernardino will conclude Sunday at 12:05 p.m., with coverage available on ESPN+ as well as local radio.
