Utah Valley University announced on Mar. 18 that its softball team will begin Western Athletic Conference play this weekend by hosting the Utah Tech Trailblazers in the Old Hammer Rivalry series at Wolverine Softball Field.
The series, which marks the start of conference competition for both teams, is set to include a single game on Friday at 4 p.m. Mountain Time and a doubleheader on Saturday starting at noon. All games will be streamed live on ESPN+, with statistics available through GoUVU.com.
Utah Valley enters the matchup following a strong home opener, where it defeated Weber State 9-1. Six players recorded multiple hits in that game, including Britney Moreno and Angelique Mann. Moreno went 3-for-4 with a triple and two RBIs, while Mann contributed three RBIs and two walks. Megan Sterzer also had a notable performance with a home run and an outfield assist.
The Wolverines have won four consecutive games and hold an overall record of 17-8, their best start since joining the Western Athletic Conference in 2014. The team has scored four or more runs in all but five games this season, winning each time they reached that mark except for three losses. Redshirt junior Ry Binne is currently on an 11-game hitting streak, matching the program’s longest since Peyton Hall’s streak in 2024.
Senior Britney Moreno achieved two career milestones during Tuesday’s win over Weber State: she became just the sixth player in program history to score 100 career runs and tied the school’s career triples record with her eleventh triple. Sophomore pitcher Lily Riley leads the conference in wins (10) and earned run average (2.07), ranking among national leaders as well.
Utah Tech arrives with a record of 10-18 and has played several common opponents with Utah Valley this season. The rivalry between these programs dates back to their junior college days; since Utah Tech began transitioning to Division I in 2021, each team has won nine games against each other.
Looking ahead, Utah Valley will continue its homestand next week by facing Nevada on Monday and crosstown rival BYU on Tuesday.
