Utah Valley University lost 10-5 to Brigham Young University in a midweek baseball game on April 7 at UCCU Ballpark. The Wolverines held early leads but were overtaken by BYU, which scored runs in the middle innings and secured the win.
The game was significant as it featured local rivals and showcased several strong individual performances despite the loss for Utah Valley. Former Cougar Chipper Beck went 2 for 3 and reached base four times for UVU, while DJ Massey contributed with one hit, three walks, and two runs scored. Massey came close to tying a school record for walks in a single game against BYU.
Chance Wallace made his first start of the season for Utah Valley, pitching three innings with four strikeouts—both season highs for him. In relief, freshman Cohen Baack recorded a career-high four strikeouts over two innings. The Wolverines initially took a lead after Beck doubled home two runs following a pitching change by BYU.
UVU briefly regained the lead in the fifth inning when Mason Strong doubled down the left-field line to score Massey. Derek Houston also helped cut into BYU’s lead with a leadoff double in the sixth inning before scoring on an errant throw during a pickoff attempt.
BYU pulled away late by scoring three runs in the seventh inning and adding two more in the eighth. Will Applegate hit his first career home run for Utah Valley but it was not enough to overcome BYU’s advantage.
Looking ahead, Utah Valley will begin Western Athletic Conference play on Friday at Sacramento State, with first pitch scheduled for 7 p.m. Mountain Time at John Smith Field.
