Utah Valley lost 8-2 to Cal State Bakersfield in the series finale on Saturday afternoon at Hardt Field, according to an April 4 announcement. The Wolverines, now with a record of 14-16, scored first but were overtaken by the Roadrunners, who improved their record to 13-18.
The game started with Utah Valley taking an early lead in the first inning. Kaden Carpenter singled with one out and Mason Strong doubled, putting two runners in scoring position. Chipper Beck then hit a sacrifice fly for an RBI, giving UVU a brief advantage.
Cal State Bakersfield responded quickly and took control after capitalizing on fielding errors by Utah Valley in the opening innings. By the end of the second inning, CSUB led 4-1 following a double by Evan Cloyd. Despite multiple hits from Carpenter, Beck, and DJ Massey—each recording two hits—the Wolverines struggled against CSUB’s pitching staff.
Utah Valley attempted rallies later in the game. In the sixth inning, Beck’s single and Mason Hamlin’s double put runners in scoring position but did not produce runs. The team managed another run in the seventh after Will Applegate’s leadoff double and a subsequent fielding error cut CSUB’s lead to 8-2. However, further opportunities were halted by effective relief pitching from CSUB.
The Wolverines’ offense tied its season high with six doubles during the contest—a mark previously set against Stanford—with Beck contributing one more double at the start of the eighth inning. On defense, Jacob Heppner pitched five innings for Utah Valley but took the loss after allowing four runs (only one earned). Chance Wallace and Carter Seely each pitched scoreless innings late in relief.
Looking ahead, Utah Valley will return home for a midweek matchup against BYU on Tuesday at 6:05 p.m., before starting Western Athletic Conference play next weekend at Sacramento State.
