Utah Valley University lost to the University of Utah, 9-5, on May 5 at Charlie Monfort Field at America First Ballpark in Salt Lake City. The game saw Utah hitting five home runs and securing the win despite efforts from several UVU players.
The matchup highlighted strong performances by Chipper Beck for UVU, who went 3-for-4 and extended his reached-base streak to 11 games. Trenton Rowan also contributed by reaching base in all three of his plate appearances. Cooper Brass hit a home run for the Wolverines, marking his first since transferring from New Mexico.
Utah gained an early lead with a five-run second inning that included two home runs by Luke Jacobs and a two-run shot from Daniel Arambula. Although UVU responded with hits from Rowan and Joseph Barnhardt—who hit his first home run of the season—the Utes continued to add runs in subsequent innings.
Pitchers Garrett Miller and Chance Wallace each held Utah scoreless during their time on the mound for UVU, while Jacob Beltran managed to keep additional Ute baserunners from scoring late in the game. Despite putting runners in scoring position during both the eighth and ninth innings, UVU was unable to close the gap before time ran out.
Utah Valley will return to Western Athletic Conference play this weekend with a three-game series against Abilene Christian beginning Friday.
