Utah Valley University defeated Utah State 10-4 on April 21, completing its first-ever season series sweep of the Aggies in a campaign where the teams played more than once.
The win marks a significant achievement for the Wolverines, who rallied from a two-run deficit by scoring eight unanswered runs. The result highlights the team’s progress and resilience as they approach the end of their regular season.
Head coach Cody Thomson said, “Hannah’s been working her butt off, and these last couple of weeks she’s really starting to come into her own.” He also praised Payge Armendariz: “Payge always gets hot this time of year. I told her it’s time to get hot, and she came through today.”
Pitcher Hannah Ortega delivered 3.1 shutout innings in relief and has allowed just three earned runs over her last six appearances spanning 14 innings. Armendariz contributed three runs batted in, including a game-tying two-run homer in the fourth inning.
The Wolverines fell behind early but responded with key hits from Armendariz and Brooklyn Ricci before taking advantage of errors and walks by Utah State in later innings. Defensive plays such as Amber Rodriguez’s throw from left field helped limit further damage by the Aggies.
Utah Valley will have a week off before facing Utah on April 28 for their final non-conference game of the regular season.
