Utah Valley University reported on May 14 that its track and field team won seven medals during the opening day of the Western Athletic Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships at Maverick Stadium in Arlington, Texas.

The early success highlights Utah Valley’s strong performance as they lead both the men’s and women’s team standings after two and four events, respectively. The Wolverines earned medals in all but one event so far, positioning themselves well for the remainder of the competition.

Emily Conlin secured gold in pole vault with a personal best jump of 4.00 meters, which ranks second all-time at Utah Valley. Morgan Nokes claimed her fifth individual WAC championship this season by winning the women’s 10,000-meter race with a time of 34:06.21. Reagan Doman finished third in that event with a time of 35:05.62, earning her third medal this season.

Porter Whitworth narrowly missed out on gold in the men’s 10,000-meter race but took silver after closing a significant gap late in the race; his final lap was completed under one minute—the only sub-minute lap recorded in that event. Eddie Garcia achieved a new personal best throw of 59.62 meters to win silver in hammer throw and concludes his collegiate career ranked third all-time at Utah Valley for that event.

Kate Carter continued her freshman improvement by taking silver in javelin with a throw of 44.71 meters—ranking fifth all-time for Utah Valley—and improving by about seven meters since March. Twelve Wolverines qualified for Saturday’s finals across various events, including Gavin Stafford who ran a top qualifying time of 20.50 seconds in the men’s 200-meter dash—second-best ever at Utah Valley and currently ranked thirty-first nationally this season.

Competition will continue tomorrow morning with multi-event finals followed by additional running events streamed live online.
