Caleb Furnell, a former Utah Valley track and field athlete, completed his first Winter Olympics with an 11th-place finish in the four-man bobsled event at the 25th Winter Olympiad in Cortina d’Ampezzo, Italy.
Furnell was part of Team Horn, which started Sunday’s heats in ninth place after Saturday’s opening runs. The team slipped to 11th after the third heat on Sunday morning and maintained that position through the final standings. They finished as the highest-ranked North American sled, ahead of fellow Americans Team del Duca, who placed 12th, and two Canadian teams that finished 14th and 20th.
Team Horn recorded a total time of 3:39.94. German teams secured both gold and silver medals with times of 3:37.57 and 3:38.14 respectively, while Switzerland took bronze with a time of 3:38.64.
Furnell becomes the fourth Utah Valley University alumnus to compete at the Olympic Games in either bobsled or skeleton events. He joins USA Bobsled coach Chris Fogt, Noelle Pikus Pace, and Akwasi Frimpong as Wolverines who have participated in these sports at the Olympics.
