No. 46 BYU women’s tennis team began their match against No. 51 Utah by winning the doubles point, but Utah rallied in singles play to win the overall dual 4–2 on Saturday in Provo.
BYU secured early momentum in doubles, with Kendall Kovick and YuYun Chen winning 6–3 on court two. Sue Yan Tan and Bella Lewis followed with a 6–3 victory on court three, giving BYU the doubles point. The first court’s match was left unfinished with Utah ahead 5–4.
Utah responded strongly in singles competition, claiming four victories to secure the team win. Gracie Levelston lost her opening set at the top spot 6–0 but won the second set 6–4 before dropping the deciding set 6–1. On court two, Kovick played a close match but fell 6–4, 7–5.
Sue Yan Tan pushed her opponent to three sets, losing the first set 6–3, taking the second set 6–4, but then dropping the final set 6–0 as Utah gained another point. Chen was defeated in straight sets at position four, losing 6–1, 6–0.
BYU’s second point came from Karina Mohamed on court six with a straight-set win of 6–4, 6–3. The contest between Sage Bergeson and her opponent on court five went unfinished after Utah clinched overall victory; Bergeson had won her first set before play stopped late in the second.
The rivalry match saw both teams competing closely in doubles before Utah ultimately took control during singles play.
