The Utah County Sheriff’s Office announced on Mar. 29 that human remains were discovered in the mountains above Springville City. Deputies responded after a witness riding a horse in the area reported finding possible human bones but was initially unable to call due to lack of cell phone service.

This discovery is significant as it has prompted an ongoing investigation involving multiple agencies and will require further forensic analysis to determine the identity of the deceased.

According to the press release, once the witness gained cell phone service, they called 911 and met with deputies and detectives that evening for an interview. Due to difficult terrain and nightfall, officials delayed their search until early morning. “Early this morning, UCSO Detectives, UCSO CSI and personnel from the Utah Medical Examiner’s office hiked into the area and found the remains. At this time, we have confirmed they are human remains and we are still investigating and processing the scene. We are also still working on confirming the identity of the deceased,” said officials from Utah County Sheriff’s Office.

Authorities stated that personnel would continue searching as long as conditions allow before resuming efforts again if necessary. The deceased will be transported to the State Medical Examiner’s office for further examination: “UCSO personnel will continue to search the area as long as conditions will allow and then continue again in the morning. The deceased will be transported to the State Medical Examiner’s office, and we will be working closely with them.” Officials added that “this [is] still an active and ongoing investigation” with updates promised as more information becomes available.

The Utah County Sheriff’s Office supports community well-being through programs like RAD Kids and Teachers Academy according to its official website. It also runs jail operations at its Security Center in Spanish Fork emphasizing accountability and reintegration according to its official website. The agency functions within county government while partnering with contract cities for law enforcement services according to its official website.
