The Utah County Sheriff’s Office announced on Apr. 1 that it has definitive proof linking Theodore “Ted” Bundy to the 1974 murder of Laura Ann Aime, closing a case that remained open for over five decades.

This development brings resolution to one of Utah County’s most notorious cold cases and provides closure for the family and community members who have sought answers since Aime disappeared in October 1974. The use of modern forensic technology was central to solving the case.

Seventeen-year-old Laura Ann Aime was last seen leaving a Halloween party in Utah County before her body was found weeks later near State Road 92 in American Fork Canyon. Investigators determined she had been bound, beaten, and strangled with a nylon stocking. While Bundy verbally acknowledged his involvement prior to his execution in Florida in January 1989, authorities at the time did not accept his admission due to insufficient evidence and limitations in investigative science.

Recent advances prompted detectives and crime scene investigators to reexamine existing evidence using updated forensic methods. DNA testing confirmed that material recovered from Aime’s body belonged to Bundy, allowing law enforcement to close the case with certainty. The Sheriff said this outcome resulted from “evidence confirmed through forensic science and efforts of the Cold Case Detectives, Jake Hall and Supervisor Sergeant Michael Reynolds.”

The Utah County Sheriff’s Office functions as part of county government and partners with contract cities for law enforcement services according to its official website. It acts as the main law enforcement agency for unincorporated areas and contract cities such as Eagle Mountain, Vineyard, and Cedar Fort according to its official website. The office also operates programs like RAD Kids and Teachers Academy aimed at supporting community well-being according to its official website.

Additionally, the Sheriff’s Office manages jail operations focused on accountability and reintegration at its facility in Spanish Fork according to its official website, collaborates with other agencies through Metro SWAT for tactical response according to its official website, and strives for effective professional services that ensure quality protection at reasonable cost according to its official website.

With this announcement, officials hope that modern DNA results will assist other agencies working on open cases involving similar circumstances.
