BYU head men’s basketball coach Kevin Young announced on April 21 the addition of Tyler Betsey to the roster for the 2026-27 season.
Betsey, a former four-star recruit, brings experience and shooting ability to BYU. His transfer is seen as part of an offseason focus on improving perimeter shooting for the team.
“We are excited to have Tyler join us at BYU,” Young said. “We have put a focus on shooting this offseason, and he fits that profile after shooting 41 percent from three last season. At 6-foot-8, he has the ability to guard multiple positions. His ability to stretch the floor, along with his versatility and potential on the defensive end, make him a great fit.”
Betsey is originally from Windsor, Connecticut and has played in 65 collegiate games at Syracuse and Cincinnati. He averages 4.9 points per game and shoots over 37 percent from three-point range in his career. During his sophomore year at Syracuse, he appeared in 31 games with averages of 6.7 points per game while making more than 40 percent of his shots both overall and from beyond the arc.
He scored in double figures nine times during that season, including a career-high performance with 18 points against Florida State where he made six out of nine three-pointers.
Before transferring to Syracuse, Betsey began his college career at Cincinnati where he played in all but one game as a freshman. In high school at St. Thomas Moore, Betsey was twice named Connecticut Gatorade Player of the Year.
