BYU softball defeated Weber State, 12-3, in a five-inning game at Gail Miller Field on April 21. Hailey Shuler led the Cougars with two home runs and a career-high five runs batted in.
The win marks BYU’s (17-28, 6-12 Big 12) strong offensive performance as they matched their season-high for runs scored in an inning with six during the first frame. The team extended its lead with a four-run fourth inning to secure the run-rule victory.
Shuler’s contributions included going three-for-three at the plate, hitting two home runs and a double while driving in five runs and scoring three times. Gianna Mares pitched her fifth complete game of the season for BYU, striking out five batters over five innings.
Other notable performances came from Maddie Udall-Woolley who went two-for-four with an RBI and extended her hitting streak to ten games. Lexie Bennett also added two hits and an RBI, while Danica Acosta contributed two RBIs.
Weber State managed to score three runs but was held off by Mares’ pitching and key defensive plays from BYU. The Wildcats loaded the bases in the fifth inning but could not overcome BYU’s lead before the game ended under run-rule conditions.
Looking ahead, BYU will begin a three-game series against Utah starting Thursday, April 23 at Dumke Family Softball Field in Salt Lake City. Live coverage is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m. Mountain Time on ESPN+.
