Creed Thompson won the men’s 10,000-meter race and set a new facility record at Drachman Stadium during the first day of the Big 12 Outdoor Championships on May 14. Thompson finished with a time of 29:20.31, breaking a stadium record that had stood since 1985 by more than 17 seconds.
The achievement marks Thompson’s second Big 12 title this year; he previously won the indoor conference championship in the 3,000-meter event. His performance highlights both individual excellence and contributes valuable points to his team’s overall standing.
In addition to Thompson’s win, Hunter Kitchen placed twelfth in the same race with a time of 30:08.90, while Dalton Mortensen finished eighteenth. In field events, Carson Riner secured fourth place in the javelin throw with a mark of 67.40 meters (221-1). Teammates Brinton Paulson and Hayden Gribble finished eighth and ninth respectively in that event.
Other notable performances included Carter Cutting and Caleb Johnson qualifying for the final round of the men’s 1,500-meter run after winning their respective heats; Cutting posted a preliminary time of 3:47.08 for sixth overall while Johnson ran a time of 3:51.23 for thirteenth place. Logan Hubler advanced to finals in the men’s 400-meter hurdles by finishing eighth at prelims with a time of 51.01 seconds.
Kaden Passey completed five events on day one of the decathlon and scored a total of 3620 points—his best finish was fourth place in shot put with a throw measuring just over thirteen meters.
At day’s end, BYU ranked fourth as a team with sixteen points earned across events so far. The championships continue through May 16 at Drachman Stadium in Tucson, Arizona.
