Creed Thompson and Carter Cutting each claimed individual titles for BYU on the final day of the Big 12 Indoor Championships in Lubbock, Texas. Thompson won the 3000-meter race with a time of 7:52.90, narrowly edging out freshman Tayvon Kitchen by one hundredth of a second. Thompson led much of the race before finishing alongside Kitchen. Isaac Hedengren, who ranks third all-time at BYU in this event, placed eighth with a time of 8:00.28.
Carter Cutting took first place in the mile with a finish time of 4:05.23. Earlier this month, Cutting set the BYU record in the mile and also contributed to BYU’s victory in the distance medley relay (DMR) during Friday’s events.
In other results, Jaden Roskelley finished sixth overall in the heptathlon with 5546 points. Kaden Passey placed 14th after setting personal bests both overall and in individual events such as the heptathlon pole vault and winning his heat in the heptathlon 1000-meter run.
Jonah Heimuli secured fourth place in the 600-yard dash with a personal best of 1:08.96 and was also part of Friday’s DMR win along with Cutting.
Tyler Poole achieved a personal record in shot put at 16.82 meters to finish thirteenth, while Peyton Williams posted his season-best mark to finish fifteenth.
Jacob Robison finished fifth and Jake Orr eighth in the 800-meter event; Robison set a personal best under one minute fifty seconds during his first collegiate attempt at that mark.
The men’s team concluded fifth overall with a total score of 57 points behind Texas Tech (125 points), Kansas State, Iowa State, and Oklahoma State.
BYU will next compete at the NCAA Indoor National Championships at Randal Tyson Track Center in Fayetteville, Arkansas on March 13-14.
