BYU swimmer Tanner Nelson finished his participation at the NCAA Championships hosted by Georgia Tech on Mar. 27.
Nelson’s performance at the national meet highlights his return to top-level collegiate swimming after time away from competition. His results reflect a season of steady progress and commitment.
Nelson competed in three events during the championships: the 1,650 freestyle, the 400 individual medley, and the 500 freestyle. In Wednesday’s session, he swam in the first heat of the 1,650 freestyle and placed second in his heat with a time of 15:01.40, which earned him a 25th overall finish and marked his fastest performance in that event this season. On Thursday, Nelson took part in the 400 individual medley and finished with a time of 3:45.62 for a place of 33rd overall—his fourth-best mark this year. He concluded his slate on Friday by competing in the 500 freestyle, finishing with a time of 4:19.41 for a position of 40th overall.
Head coach Tamber McAllister said she was pleased with Nelson’s efforts throughout the week at nationals. “I’m incredibly proud of Tanner and the gutsy performance he delivered at the NCAA Championships this week,” McAllister said. “Since returning from his mission, he’s worked tirelessly to climb back to the national stage, and he’s done it with determination and class. I’m excited to see his continued upward trajectory this summer and next season.”
Nelson’s results cap off an important milestone as he continues to represent BYU at major collegiate competitions.
