WASHINGTON—Today, U.S. Senator Mitt Romney (R-UT) took the lead in a Senate hearing discussing U.S. policy on Taiwan, emphasizing the importance of supporting Taiwan in the face of China's increasing aggression in the Indo-Pacific region.
During the hearing, Senator Romney raised concerns about the lack of a comprehensive strategy from the Administration to counter the China threat, as required by law. He stressed the necessity for this strategy to be presented to Congress, both classified and unclassified, rather than just for an "in camera" review, as suggested by Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs Daniel J. Kritenbrink.
In his opening statement, Senator Romney expressed support for Taiwan and highlighted the need to stand by commitments to democratic nations. He stated, "I hope that the people of Taiwan recognize that we are their friends, that we are anxious for them to be able to determine their own course and to chart their lives as they wish."
During the hearing, Senator Romney questioned Assistant Secretary Kritenbrink about China's efforts to isolate Taiwan diplomatically and economically. He also inquired about China's strategy regarding Taiwan's economic ties and the State Department's delivery of the outlined China strategy to Congress.
Assistant Secretary Kritenbrink acknowledged China's global presence and economic objectives, emphasizing the importance of recognizing Taiwan as a valuable partner. He assured Senator Romney that the Administration is working to provide the required China strategy to Congress.
Senator Romney highlighted the need for the U.S. to adopt a strategic approach that aligns with China's efforts in promoting national interests and security. He emphasized the importance of economic ties and partnerships with nations like Taiwan to counter China's influence.
The hearing led by Senator Romney shed light on the complex dynamics between the U.S., Taiwan, and China, underscoring the significance of a clear and robust strategy to address the challenges posed by China's actions in the region.
