BYU football hosted its fifth annual Alumni Game at LaVell Edwards Stadium on April 3, where Team Royal secured a 29-22 victory over Team Navy. The event brought together more than 350 former players and their families for a day of celebration and reunion.
The Alumni Day is significant for the BYU football community as it connects generations of players, from those who played in the early 1960s to members of the current team. Activities included a team meeting, lunch, tours, and culminated with the game under stadium lights.
Former offensive coach Norm Chow led Team Royal, while Robbie Bosco, quarterback of BYU’s 1984 national championship team, coached Team Navy. John Walsh and Charlie Peterson quarterbacked Royal; Steve Clements led Navy on offense.
The game began with both teams exchanging interceptions for points under special alumni rules. Cody Hoffman scored the first touchdown for Navy with a toe-tap catch in the end zone. Aleva Hifo responded with Royal’s first touchdown and conversion to give them an early lead. By halftime, Royal had extended its advantage thanks to key plays from Talmage Gunther.
In the second half, Clements connected with Dax Milne for a long touchdown that narrowed Navy’s deficit before Colby Pearson restored Royal’s double-digit lead. Mitch Matthews kept Navy within reach by catching another touchdown pass late in the game. In the final moments, Ben Bywater intercepted a pass to give Navy one last chance to win but Tim McTyer broke up a potential scoring play as time expired.
Pearson finished as leading receiver with 124 yards; Peterson and Walsh each threw for 129 yards while Clements passed for 270 yards. The event concluded with opportunities for fans to watch highlights or replays on BYUtv.
