Carson Riner and Brayden Dahl achieved top ten marks for Brigham Young University in the javelin and 400-meter hurdles during the USC Ron and Sharlene Alice Trojan Invitational held Saturday at Alyson Felix Field at Loker Stadium, according to a Mar. 28 announcement.

The results are significant as both athletes improved their personal bests while securing high placements among BYU’s all-time performers in their respective events.

Riner made his season debut in the javelin throw with a distance of 69.14 meters (226-10), which places him seventh all-time at BYU for this event. The sophomore surpassed his previous personal record by more than three meters, earning second place overall. “Carson demonstrated his capability of throwing distances exceeding his previous personal record during training throughout the year,” throws coach Niklas Arrhenius said. “It was an exciting moment when he achieved this feat on his very first throw of the year.” Brinton Paulson also debuted in the event, finishing fourth with a throw of 63.44 meters (208-1).

Dahl finished the 400-meter hurdles in 50.32 seconds, also ranking him seventh all-time at BYU for that event and placing second overall at the meet ahead of teammates Garrett Copelin, Treyton Anderson, and Jayden Jessee who took third, fourth, and fifth respectively.

In other events, Copelin won first place in the 110-meter hurdles with a personal-record time of 14.25 seconds; Anderson and Jessee followed closely behind him. Tyler Poole set a new personal best in shot put with a toss of 17.02 meters (55-10ÂĽ), taking second place while Erik Bryant placed seventh.

Additional highlights include Silas Zimmerman winning pole vault by clearing 5.17 meters (16-11½) with Dallin Thornton finishing second; Josh Taylor claimed second place in the 400-meter dash; Connor Saunders finished second in high jump alongside Carter Walker who took third; relay teams placed third (4x100m) and second (4x400m).

Looking ahead, BYU Cougars will compete next at the Texas Relays hosted at Myers Track and Soccer Stadium from April 1 through April 4.
