BYU men’s volleyball defeated Concordia University Irvine 3-0 at the Smith Fieldhouse on March 21, marking their second consecutive sweep of the Golden Eagles.
The win brings BYU’s season record to 17-6. The Cougars recorded 38 kills on 65 attacks and limited Concordia to a .222 hitting percentage with 30 kills on 72 attacks. BYU also tallied nine service aces compared to six by Concordia and forced their opponents into committing 14 attack errors while only suffering six themselves.
Head coach Shawn Olmstead said, “It was really nice to be back in the Smith Fieldhouse. I am really proud of the guys. I feel like their response after a tough road trip was really good. It sets us up well for what we have circled on our calendars in a big match aganist Pepperdine.”
Connor Oldani led BYU with ten kills and hit .562, also contributing four digs and an ace. Teilon-Jonathan Tufuga added eight kills, while Trent Moser had seven. Senior Jackson Fife led defensively with five digs, followed by Oldani’s four. Seven out of ten Cougars who played recorded at least one service ace, with Cole Hauser and Tyler Herget each serving two.
Nearly every Cougar who scored a kill hit over .500, including AJ Cottle and Trevor Herget who both hit .750. Cottle and Moser each contributed two blocks, while senior captain Tyler Herget provided 31 assists during the match.
This victory marks Olmstead’s 204th as head coach at BYU; he is now one win away from tying Carl McGown for most wins as head coach in program history.
The Cougars will next host Pepperdine at the Smith Fieldhouse on Friday, March 20, with streaming available on B1G+.
