A man from Colorado was arrested after breaking into a home in the South Fork neighborhood of Provo Canyon on March 5, according to the Utah County Sheriff’s Office. Authorities said the incident began around 8 p.m. when the suspect entered an occupied residence.
One of the residents confronted the intruder and tried to persuade him to leave. Instead, the suspect went further into the house and started damaging property. Other people inside locked themselves in a bedroom for safety.
The initial resident then retrieved a handgun and again confronted the suspect, verbally instructing him to leave. The sheriff’s office reported that “the suspect then attacked the resident, who defended themself by firing several shots at the suspect.” The statement continued: “The suspect was struck once by gunfire and then fled the home.”
After leaving, police say the injured man stole a parked truck outside and attempted to escape. Deputies from Utah County Sheriff’s Office responded quickly, intercepted him as he tried to flee, and took him into custody.
“The suspect has been taken to a local hospital for treatment and was released back into our custody and he will be booked into the Utah County Jail,” according to law enforcement officials. Minor injuries were reported for the resident who confronted the intruder.
Authorities identified that “the suspect is a resident of Colorado and has no known ties to this area.” Officials added that there is no ongoing threat in Provo Canyon but noted that it remains an active investigation.
