Kansas defeated BYU 7-6 on May 15 in game two of their weekend baseball series at Miller Park. The deciding run came on a solo home run by Kansas in the top of the ninth inning, giving the Jayhawks a narrow victory over the Cougars.
The game was significant as it clinched Kansas its first Big 12 regular-season baseball championship since 1949. Both teams traded momentum throughout, with BYU mounting a late comeback that ultimately fell short.
BYU’s Easton Jones hit a three-run home run in the bottom of the eighth inning to tie the game at six runs apiece. In the ninth, Tu’alau Wolfgramm led off for BYU with an infield single and stole second base but was left stranded as Kansas held onto its lead. The Cougars finished with six runs on three hits and left five runners on base, while Kansas scored seven runs on ten hits.
The Jayhawks took an early lead, scoring one run in the second inning and extending their advantage to 3-0 by the fourth. A two-run homer followed by another solo shot put Kansas ahead 6-0 before BYU responded in later innings. Crew McChesney contributed for BYU with a two-RBI triple, while Wolfgramm added an RBI sacrifice fly.
Kansas centerfielder Tyson Owens’ ninth-inning home run proved decisive and secured both the win and conference title for his team. The victory marked an important milestone for Kansas baseball history.
BYU and Kansas are scheduled to play game three of their series on Saturday, May 16 at Miller Park. Fans can follow live coverage via ESPN+, BYU Radio app, or local radio stations.
