Jane Hedengren set a new NCAA record in the women’s 10,000-meter race with a time of 30:46.80 at the Stanford Invitational on April 3. The event took place at Cobb Track and Angell Field.
Hedengren’s achievement is significant as it surpasses the previous collegiate record held by Florida’s Parker Valby by nearly four seconds. Her performance highlights her rapid rise in collegiate track and field, as she now holds two NCAA records, including her earlier indoor mark in the 5000 meters.
During her outdoor and event debut, Hedengren stayed close to New Mexico’s Pamela Kosgei before pulling away in the final lap with a strong finish of 1:06.12. She finished more than three seconds ahead of Kosgei and over forty-five seconds ahead of the rest of the field. This race also marks her first appearance on BYU’s outdoor program top ten list, bringing her total to three school records across both indoor and outdoor seasons.
Other notable performances from BYU athletes included Raygan Peterson winning the women’s 3000-meter steeplechase in 9:55.03—making her eighth all-time for BYU—and Taylor Lovell taking first place in the women’s 5000 meters with a time of 15:15.46, which is now third-fastest in program history. Carmen Alder won the women’s 1500 meters with a time of 4:08.56, moving to fourth on BYU’s all-time list.
Jenna Hutchins and Nelah Roberts also competed alongside Hedengren in the women’s 10,000 meters; Hutchins finished fifth with a personal best while Roberts earned fourth on BYU’s all-time list during her first appearance outdoors.
