Isaac Hedengren set a new Brigham Young University (BYU) top ten record in the men’s 5000-meter event at the Stanford Invitational on April 4. Hedengren finished the race in 13:28.55, earning him the No. 7 spot on BYU’s all-time performance list for this distance.
The achievement highlights ongoing success for BYU Cougars Men’s Track & Field athletes during recent competitions held in California and Texas. The meets provided opportunities for several team members to achieve personal bests and notable placements across various events.
At the Stanford Invitational, Hedengren improved his personal best by more than twelve seconds and placed tenth in his heat. Teammates Noah Jenkins and Hunter Kitchen also competed, finishing with times of 13:35.86 and 13:37.26 respectively. In other distance events, Carter Cutting won his heat of the men’s 1500-meter with a time of 3:41.32, closely followed by Tayvon Kitchen who finished just one-tenth of a second later.
In Texas, Garrett Copelin ran the men’s 110-meter hurdles in a wind-aided time of 14.03 seconds at the Texas Relays, which would have placed him eighth on BYU’s all-time chart if not for wind conditions. Carson Riner narrowly missed setting a new personal record in javelin but still secured second place with a throw of over sixty-nine meters; he currently holds seventh place on BYU’s all-time javelin list.
Additional performances included Tyler Poole taking second place in shot put and competing alongside Mark Bryant in discus events at both Texas Relays and Bobcat Invitational meets. Freshman brothers Erik and Mark Bryant recorded strong showings as well—Mark made his collegiate debut in hammer throw while Erik set a new personal best in shot put.
Looking ahead, Mark Bryant is scheduled to compete again at the Texas Relays on April 4 before several Cougars participate next week at both Brian Clay Multis in Azusa, California and Weber State Spring Open in Ogden.
