BYU defeated UNLV 5-2 in a nonconference baseball game on May 5 in Las Vegas. Nine pitchers for BYU combined for 14 strikeouts, which was the second-highest total of their season.
The outcome matters as it improves BYU’s record to 24-23 overall and helps maintain momentum before their final Big 12 regular-season road trip. UNLV, now at a record of 26-21, left thirteen runners stranded during the game.
BYU head baseball coach Trent Pratt said, “I thought our pitchers did a great job. We threw a bunch of guys tonight that haven’t pitched a lot recently, and I was proud of the way they were ready when they came in to pitch.”
Ryder Robinson went three-for-four with a double and scored once. Bryker Hurdsman contributed two runs batted in and scored once himself. Crew McChesney also drove in one run. Luke Sterner pitched two innings with six strikeouts while allowing one run.
BYU scored first when Tu’alau Wolfgramm singled, advanced on a ground ball, stole third base, and reached home on a passed ball in the second inning. UNLV tied the game with a home run in the bottom half of that inning. After four scoreless innings from both teams, BYU took control by scoring four runs in the seventh inning through hits by Robinson, Hurdsman, McChesney and capitalizing on passed balls.
UNLV managed another run late but could not close the gap as Luke Sterner struck out three batters to preserve BYU’s lead heading into the ninth inning. Dan Brousseau earned his third win after pitching one perfect inning with two strikeouts; Tyler Ball secured his first career save by facing just three batters to finish out the game.
Looking ahead, BYU will travel to Lubbock for its last Big 12 regular-season road series against Texas Tech from May 7 to May 9 at Rip Griffin Park. All games will be broadcast live on ESPN+ as well as various radio outlets.
