BYU head men’s basketball coach Kevin Young announced on Apr. 14 the signing of Collin Chandler, who will join the Cougars after spending his first two collegiate seasons at Kentucky.
Chandler’s return to Utah is notable as he brings experience from a major program and has demonstrated strong shooting skills, which could strengthen BYU’s roster for upcoming seasons.
“We are excited to welcome Collin and his wife, Hannah, to BYU,” Young said. “His passion for the game and his ability to make winning plays all over the floor is going to make everyone around him better. He showed that he is one of the premier 3-point shooters in the country last season and wasn’t afraid to take and make big time shots.”
During his sophomore year at Kentucky, Chandler played in all 36 games with 31 starts, averaging 9.7 points, 2.8 rebounds, and 2.3 assists per game. He was second on the team with 44 steals and led in three-pointers made with 73 while shooting 41 percent from beyond the arc. He scored in double figures on nineteen occasions, including a career-high of twenty-three points against Vanderbilt.
In Southeastern Conference play, Chandler averaged ten-and-a-half points per game while leading the league by shooting forty-five point seven percent from three-point range among players with at least forty-two made threes. His performance included multiple games with six three-pointers each against Vanderbilt and Georgia.
Chandler began his college career coming off the bench as a freshman but contributed significantly during Kentucky’s final stretch that season. Before college, he was recognized as Utah Gatorade Player of the Year after averaging over twenty-one points per game at Farmington High School and was highly ranked nationally by recruiting services ESPN and 247Sports.
After high school graduation, Chandler served a two-year mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Sierra Leone and London.
