The No. 53 BYU women’s tennis team defeated No. 29 Texas Tech, 4-3, at the McLeod Tennis Center in Lubbock on March 21.
The match was significant for BYU as it marked one of their most notable victories of the season against a higher-ranked opponent. The win demonstrated the team’s resilience and ability to perform under pressure.
Head coach Holly Hasler said, “This was a gritty weekend for us. Winning two 4-3 matches on the road shows the toughness of this team. Every player stepped up in different moments and never backed down. We battled the heat, stayed united and competed with heart. Our focus was playing with assertive confidence, and the team delivered that from start to finish.”
Texas Tech secured the doubles point early by winning on courts one and two, while BYU’s Bella Lewis and Sue Yan Tan won on court three. In singles play, Sue Yan Tan tied the match with a straight-set victory on court three, followed by Sage Bergeson who gave BYU its first lead after winning her match on court five. Texas Tech responded by taking courts one and two to regain a 3-2 advantage.
Karina Mohamed then won her match on court six after a close tiebreaker in the first set, leveling the score at 3-3. The deciding point came down to YuYun Chen on court four. After losing her first set, Chen recovered to win the next two sets decisively and clinched the overall victory for BYU.
