Riley Chamberlain and Jane Hedengren have been named to the third watch list for The Bowerman, according to an announcement by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) on Wednesday.
The Bowerman is an annual award given to the top male and female collegiate track and field athletes in the United States. It was established in 2009 and is named after Bill Bowerman, a well-known track and field coach and co-founder of Nike.
This is Chamberlain’s first appearance on The Bowerman Watch List. She achieved this recognition after setting a new NCAA all-time record in the mile with a time of 4:20.61 at the David Hemery Valentine Invitational. In addition, she won the Big 12 title in the 800-meter event at the Big 12 Championships and finished third overall in the 3000 meters with a time of 8:56.28.
Hedengren has now appeared on The Bowerman Watch List three times this season. As a freshman, she earned her place by winning the Big 12 title in the 3000 meters with a time of 8:46.11 and finishing second in the mile event. Hedengren is currently the only freshman included on this season’s list.
Chamberlain and Hedengren are also notable as they are the only athletes from the same school represented on this edition of The Bowerman Watch List.
The current list includes athletes from several universities across different events such as high jump, sprints, throws, pole vault, distance, and mid-distance running. The full roster features Temitope Adeshina (Texas Tech), JaMeesia Ford (South Carolina), Billah Jepkirui (Oklahoma State), Axelina Johansson (Nebraska), Pamela Kosgei (New Mexico), Doris Lemngole (Alabama), Hana Moll (Washington), and Juliette Whittaker (Stanford).
Members of The Bowerman Advisory Board vote to select their top ten collegiate track and field athletes for each preseason watch list. There are eight watch lists released throughout each season.
