BYU women’s tennis falls to Houston in road matchup

No. 29 BYU women’s tennis lost to No. 47 Houston with a score of 4-0 on Saturday at the Barbara Wallace Winston Tennis Facility in Houston, Texas.

Houston began by winning the doubles point. The team of Sophie Schouten and Chems Doha Zeghlouli, ranked No. 82 nationally, defeated BYU’s Gracie Levelston and Sage Bergeson 6-1 on Court 1. On Court 3, Sue Yan Tan and Bella Lewis lost in a close match, falling 7-6 (7-2) to Houston’s No. 87 duo. The doubles match on Court 2 between Kendall Kovick and YuYun Chen and their opponents was tied at 6-6 when play was stopped.

In singles play, BYU players extended several matches but could not secure any wins before the overall result was decided. Karina Mohamed lost a close contest on Court 6 with scores of 6-4, 7-5. Bergeson was defeated at No. 5 singles by a score of 6-3, 6-4. The match ended after Kovick dropped a first-set tiebreaker on Court 2 before losing the second set.

Three singles matches were unfinished when play concluded: Levelston forced a third set on Court 1 after dropping the first; Tan split sets at No. 3 singles; and Chen reached a third set on Court 4.

With this result, BYU’s record moves to 11 wins and three losses for the season while Houston remains undefeated at eleven wins and no losses.

BYU will next play against Utah in Salt Lake City on Saturday, March 7 at noon Mountain Standard Time.
