BYU softball earned its first Big 12 series win of the season on Apr. 10, defeating Houston 10-6 at Gail Miller Field.
The victory is significant for BYU as it marks back-to-back conference wins and their second consecutive game scoring ten runs. Despite being out-hit by Houston, BYU managed four home runs to secure the win.
Ilove’a Brittingham led BYU’s offense, going two-for-two with two home runs and five runs batted in, tying her season high. Lily Owens contributed a home run and three RBI, while Maddie Udall-Woolley had two hits including a double. Danica Acosta also homered in the game.
Houston scored first in the opening inning after a contested play but BYU quickly responded with three runs in the bottom half, highlighted by Brittingham’s full-count home run to center field. In the second inning, Owens hit a three-run homer followed by another Brittingham home run that extended BYU’s lead to 8-1.
Houston narrowed the gap in later innings but could not overcome BYU’s lead. Acosta’s sixth-inning home run sealed the score at 10-6. Pitcher Jada Villega recorded her second win of the season and Gianna Mares secured her first save.
Looking ahead, BYU will attempt to sweep Houston in game three of the series scheduled for Saturday at noon Mountain Time on ESPN+.
