BYU announced on April 14 that it will return home to face No. 23 ranked Arizona State University in a three-game Big 12 baseball series from April 16-18 at Miller Park. The Sun Devils currently hold a narrow lead over the Cougars in the conference standings, with a record of 9-6 compared to BYU’s 8-7.
The upcoming series is important as both teams are closely positioned in the Big 12 race. The games will be broadcast live on ESPN+ and available through various BYU Radio platforms, including SiriusXM and local FM radio.
BYU enters the matchup following its first-ever sweep in Big 12 play, having won three consecutive games against Houston earlier this month. The team also secured a shutout victory over Lamar during their recent Texas road trip. Over those four games, BYU pitchers combined for an earned run average of just 1.25 and limited opponents to a .185 batting average.
Offensively, Easton Jones led the Cougars by hitting .444 with eight hits and five runs batted in during the Texas swing. As a team, BYU recorded a .275 batting average across those contests, collecting three home runs and thirteen doubles.
Currently holding an overall record of 19-16 and tied for fifth place in the conference standings at midseason, BYU has won seven of its last ten games and is riding its longest winning streak of the year at five games. Arizona State comes into Provo with an overall record of 26-12 but is coming off a loss despite being strong on the road this season.
This week’s meetings mark the sixty-fourth time BYU and ASU have faced each other; while Arizona State leads historically, BYU has won seven out of their last ten matchups—including an upset win during last year’s conference championship tournament. The two programs share additional history from their days together in the Western Athletic Conference between 1967 and 1978.
Notably, current BYU head coach Trent Pratt played his first two collegiate seasons at Arizona State before finishing his career elsewhere and playing professionally. Pratt was teammates with Mitch Jones—father of current Cougars players Easton Jones and Cooper Jones—during his time as a Sun Devil.
