BYU stands fifth after first day at Big 12 swimming and diving championship

BYU finished the first day of the 2026 Big 12 Championship in fifth place, according to results from Greensboro, North Carolina.

Arizona State leads after day one with 180 points. Utah is second with 168 points, followed by Arizona (166), TCU (162), BYU (148), Cincinnati (144), and West Virginia (142).

Freshman Mattia Reina achieved a milestone for BYU, swimming the 50 butterfly in 21.92 seconds during the time-trial portion of Tuesday’s events. This time is now the tenth-fastest in BYU program history.

In relay events, BYU’s team of Max Kleinman, Peter Etzold, Jake Aina and Tanner Edwards took fourth place in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:25.16. The squad of Tanner Nelson, Payton Plumb, Joshua Reed and Darwin Anderson placed fifth in the 800 freestyle relay at 6:23.77.

For diving, BYU participated in the team event that combines scores from the 1-meter, 3-meter and platform disciplines. The Cougars finished seventh overall with a score of 255.20.

The competition continues Wednesday at the Greensboro Aquatic Center for Day Two of the Big 12 Championships. Events will be available for streaming on ESPN+.
