BYU softball will continue its nine-game homestand at Gail Miller Field by hosting Utah Tech on Tuesday, Apr. 14, and Iowa State in a three-game series starting Thursday, Apr. 16.
The games come as BYU seeks to build on momentum from last week, when the Cougars went 3-1 overall and swept Houston for their first Big 12 series win and sweep of the season. The team currently holds a record of 14-26 overall and is 5-10 in conference play.
During last week’s Houston series, BYU’s offense produced consistently with ten runs scored in each game. Ilove’a Brittingham led the team with a .714 batting average and three home runs across the weekend. She was joined by seven teammates who hit .300 or better during the series: Lexie Bennett (.500), Rita Tavita (.444), Tristen Turlington (.400), Lily Owens (.364), Danica Acosta (.364), Hailey Shuler (.333) and Maddie Udall-Woolley (.308). Pitchers Jada Villegas and Gianna Mares combined for three wins and totaled eighteen strikeouts.
The Cougars have had success historically against both upcoming opponents. Against Utah Tech (16-24, 3-6 Western Athletic Conference), BYU leads the all-time series 11-0, including a win earlier this season in St. George by a score of 10-1 in five innings. Iowa State (24-17, 5-10 Big 12) also trails BYU historically; the Cougars lead that all-time matchup ten games to three.
Looking ahead after this week’s matchups with Utah Tech and Iowa State, BYU will finish its homestand against Weber State on Tuesday, Apr. 21.
