BYU softball defeated Utah 5-1 at Dumke Stadium on April 25, taking the third game of their series.
The victory allowed BYU to finish the three-game set with a win after dropping the first two games. The Cougars now hold an overall record of 18-30 and a conference record of 7-14 in Big 12 play.
Hailey Shuler started for BYU and pitched a complete game, her third of the season. She allowed five hits, one run, four walks, and struck out three batters. Shuler also contributed offensively with an RBI double as part of her one-for-four performance at the plate.
Ilove’a Brittingham led BYU’s offense by going two-for-four with a double and two runs batted in. Lily Owens also went two-for-four with a double, while Maddie Udall-Woolley and Rita Tavita each added doubles as well. The Cougars scored twice in the second inning following base hits from Danica Acosta and Owens before Brittingham’s double drove them home. In the fifth inning, BYU extended its lead by scoring three runs with two outs on consecutive hits from Owens, Shuler, Brittingham, and Udall-Woolley.
Utah managed to score once in the bottom of the seventh but could not close the gap further as they grounded into a fielder’s choice to end the game.
Looking ahead, BYU will return home to host No. 24 Arizona State for their final Big 12 series of the year starting Thursday, April 30 at 6 p.m., which will be broadcast on ESPN+.
