BYU softball earned a 10-1 run-rule victory against Utah Tech in the second game of its Trailblazer Classic doubleheader at Karl Brooks Field on Friday, Mar. 13.
The win is significant for BYU, which improved to a record of 7-18 overall and remains winless in Big 12 conference play. The Cougars started strong by scoring five runs in the first inning and continued to build their lead throughout the game.
Danica Acosta led off with a triple and scored on an error, setting the tone for BYU’s offense. Lily Owens contributed with a home run and two runs scored, while Hailey Shuler added two hits and a double. Ilove’a Brittingham drove in two runs, and Bre Townsend hit a solo home run in the fourth inning. Pitcher Gianna Mares threw five innings, allowing three hits and one run while striking out six batters.
Utah Tech managed to score once in the bottom of the second inning but was unable to close the gap as BYU extended its lead with additional home runs from Townsend and Owens. The game ended after five innings due to the run-rule margin.
BYU will finish its participation in the Trailblazer Classic with a matchup against Omaha scheduled for Saturday, Mar. 14 at 11 a.m. Mountain Time on ESPN+.
