BYU softball lost to No. 2 Texas Tech, 10-1, in five innings at Tracy Sellers Field on Friday night, April 3.

The game saw the Cougars fall behind early as Texas Tech scored nine runs in the second inning. The loss moves BYU’s record to 11-24 overall and 2-9 in Big 12 conference play.

Hailey Shuler led BYU with a strong performance at the plate, going two-for-two with a double. In the top of the second inning, BYU put two runners in scoring position after Shuler singled and Ilove’a Brittingham walked, but they were unable to score after consecutive pop outs ended the threat.

Texas Tech extended its lead by batting through its order in the bottom of the second inning, scoring nine runs on six hits—including two home runs—and drawing five walks. BYU managed to get on the scoreboard in the fourth when Shuler doubled to right center and came home as Bre Townsend reached base on a fielding error by Texas Tech for a score of 9-1. However, Texas Tech answered immediately with another run in their half of the fourth inning.

In their final chance at bat, BYU’s Maddie Udall-Woolley was hit by a pitch and advanced to second base after Miranda Mansfield laid down a sacrifice bunt. The game ended after two consecutive strikeouts closed out five innings under run-rule conditions.

The series finale between BYU and Texas Tech is scheduled for Saturday at noon Central Time and will be broadcast on ESPN+.
