BYU softball lost to No. 2 Texas Tech, 11-1, in six innings at Tracy Sellers Field on Thursday night, Apr. 2.

The Cougars scored the first run of the game but could not hold off a strong response from the Red Raiders, who went on to score eleven unanswered runs and secure the win with a six-run sixth inning.

BYU started with an early lead as Danica Acosta singled past left field and advanced to second base. Lily Owens then doubled down the left field line to bring Acosta home for BYU’s only run of the game. However, Texas Tech responded quickly by loading the bases on three walks and capitalizing on a wild pitch and two groundouts to take a three-run lead without recording a hit.

Texas Tech extended its advantage in later innings. In the fourth inning, an inside-the-park home run made it 4-1. The Red Raiders loaded the bases again in the fifth and added another run through a sacrifice fly before BYU ended that threat with a double play. In the sixth inning, Texas Tech drew multiple bases-loaded walks and finished with a grand slam that triggered an early end due to run rules.

Lily Owens led BYU offensively by going one-for-three with an RBI double. The loss brings BYU’s record to 11-23 overall and 2-8 in Big 12 play.

Game two between BYU and Texas Tech is scheduled for Friday, Apr. 3 at 6 p.m., airing nationally on FS1.
