BYU softball lost to Kansas 6-4 in its Big 12 conference home opener on March 26. The game, played at Gail Miller Field, saw the Cougars attempt a late comeback that ultimately fell short against the Jayhawks.
The matchup was significant as it marked BYU’s first home conference game of the season. With this result, BYU’s record moved to 10-21 overall and 1-6 in Big 12 play.
Kansas built an early lead by scoring four runs in the second inning, with three coming from a bases-clearing hit and error and another on an RBI single up the middle. In the fifth inning, Kansas added two more runs through a home run and a BYU error, making it a six-run deficit for the Cougars.
BYU responded by scoring one run each in the fifth and sixth innings. In the seventh inning, Lily Owens hit her second double of the night to drive in Danica Acosta. Hailey Shuler then singled to right field to bring Owens home, cutting Kansas’s lead to two runs before BYU’s rally ended with a ground out and strikeout.
Owens finished with two doubles, an RBI, and one run scored. Other contributors included Shuler (one RBI), Bre Townsend (one RBI), Hailey Morrow (double and one run), and Rita Tavita (double).
