BYU softball earned a 10-9 win over Houston at Gail Miller Field on April 11, completing a series sweep in Big 12 play.
The game was notable for its high scoring and dramatic momentum shifts, as both teams traded leads through several innings. The result gives BYU (14-26, 5-10 Big 12) three straight wins against Houston and marks an important boost in conference standings.
Saturday’s matchup saw seven hits from six different BYU batters. Rita Tavita went two-for-four at the plate, driving in two runs. Ilova’a Brittingham scored a season-high three runs, including her tenth home run of the season and third in two games. Other key contributors included Hailey Shuler with two RBIs and Lexie Bennett who brought home one run.
After a lightning delay postponed the start of the game, Houston took an early lead with two home runs in the first inning. BYU responded by batting through its lineup in the second inning—Brittingham’s homer sparked a rally that put BYU ahead. The Cougars extended their lead to four runs before another weather delay interrupted play.
Houston narrowed the gap with a three-run homer in the fourth inning and later regained the lead at 9-7 after scoring three more times. In response, BYU loaded the bases and Tavita delivered a crucial double to tie the score at nine apiece before Bennett’s sacrifice fly gave them back the lead. The game ended when Lily Owens caught a deep foul ball for the final out.
Looking ahead, BYU will continue its homestand next week with a Tuesday morning game against Utah Tech.
