Four divers from Brigham Young University (BYU) are scheduled to participate in the NCAA Zone E Championships next week. The event, which will be held at the Aquatic and Tennis Complex in Flagstaff, Arizona, is hosted by Northern Arizona University and the NCAA. It will take place from March 9 to March 11, with sessions running each day in the early afternoon.
The results of this competition will determine which divers qualify for the upcoming NCAA Championships in Atlanta later this month.
Representing BYU on the men’s side are sophomore Martí Llop and freshman Ashton Sparks. Both athletes are set to compete in all three events: 1-meter springboard, 3-meter springboard, and platform diving.
On the women’s team, senior Sophia DeBergh and freshman Brooklyn Goeckeritz will compete. Goeckeritz is entered in all three events alongside her male teammates, while DeBergh will focus on the 3-meter event.
At their most recent meet—the Big 12 Championships held in Greensboro, North Carolina—the BYU men’s team finished fifth overall and the women’s team placed eighth. During that competition, Llop achieved a personal best score of 352.65 in the 1-meter event for seventh place and also finished eighth on platform with a score of 308.70. Sparks reached finals in both the 3-meter (11th place) and platform (14th place) events.
DeBergh placed 28th on the 3-meter board with a score of 229.55 at Big 12s. Goeckeritz’s top performances included finishing seventeenth in both the 1-meter (238.15) and platform (202.80) events.
Pending their results at Zone E, BYU divers could advance to compete at the NCAA Championships scheduled for March 25-28 in Atlanta.
