The BYU men’s tennis team lost 4-3 to the Utah Utes in its final regular season match on April 11 at the George S. Eccles Tennis Center.
The close result leaves BYU with a record of 13-9 overall and 1-7 in Big 12 play as they head into postseason competition. The match was notable for singles wins by Caden Hasler, who secured his second career Big 12 singles victory, and Adam Chodur, who picked up his first conference win of the season at the No. 1 singles position.
In doubles action, Utah took an early lead on court three before Otto Schreiner and Chodur came back from a deficit to win their set and even the score. The deciding doubles point went to TJ Wells and Tygen Goldammer after a tightly contested tiebreaker, giving BYU an initial advantage heading into singles matches.
Utah quickly responded in singles by winning five of the first six sets. Hasler provided BYU’s only opening-set victory, holding off Balthazar Huss after losing a lead but ultimately taking the set. Redd Owen returned to singles play for BYU but fell in straight sets. Utah also earned straight-set victories over Yubel Ubri and David Duong; Duong lost despite having an early advantage.
Goldammer kept BYU’s hopes alive with a comeback win that included overcoming deficits during tiebreaks. Hasler followed with another win before Chodur tied the overall match score by coming from behind late in his third set. With everything riding on Goldammer’s final court appearance, he rallied from being down but ultimately lost his set as Utah clinched victory.
Looking ahead, BYU will compete next week at the Big 12 Championships held at the USTA National Campus in Orlando, Florida. Their first-round opponent has not yet been announced.
