No. 6 BYU men’s volleyball lost to No. 3 Hawai’i 3-1 (27-25, 23-25, 25-17, 25-18) in Honolulu on Wednesday night. The match was the first of two top-10 NCAA men’s volleyball games between these teams this week.

Both teams entered the match with nine-match winning streaks. With this win, Hawai’i extended its streak to ten matches. BYU will look to rebound in a rematch scheduled for Friday.

Trent Moser led BYU with a season-high 18 kills and contributed four aces, four digs, and two blocks. Setter Tyler Herget recorded 47 assists, helping BYU reach a .386 hitting percentage. Trevor Herget and Connor Oldani each added 12 kills for the Cougars.

In the opening set, Hawai’i took an early lead at home before BYU responded with a run to take a brief advantage. The set remained close until Hawai’i secured it on their third set point at 27-25. This loss ended BYU’s previous streak of winning 27 consecutive sets.

The second set saw another early run from Hawai’i, but BYU answered quickly and kept the score close throughout. Moser clinched the set for BYU with his 14th kill, evening the match at one set apiece.

Hawai’i established control early in the third set and maintained their lead throughout, winning it 25-17 without trailing at any point.

BYU started strong in the fourth set behind three quick kills from Trevor Herget but could not maintain momentum as Hawai’i took control after the media timeout and finished off the match with a six-point run to seal a 25-18 win.

The teams are scheduled to meet again Friday at 10 p.m. MST on ESPN+.
